BOYS BASKETBALL: Clippers, Cats suffer first losses
CRARYVILLE — Rensselaer built a double-digit lead in the second half, then held off a late Germantown rally to earn a 59-57 victory in the opening round of the Taconic Hills Holiday Tournament on Friday.
Rensselaer went on to win the tournament title by beating Berlin/New Lebanon, which punched its ticket to the title game with a 59-38 victory over Taconic Hills in Friday’s other opening round game.
Rensselaer took a 15-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and widened the gap to 29-22 at halftime and 49-35 by the end of the third quarter. The Clippers fought back to make a game of it in the final stanza, outscoring the Rams, 22-10, but came up short.
Ramell Johnson was Rensselaer’s high scorer with 19 points. Patrick Sullivan added 16 and Samir Lockhart had 15.
Jace Anderson scored 17 points for the Clippers. Dylan Mayr had 13 and Robbie Eaton and Bryan Bathrick each had 11.

SCHENECTADY — Lavon Fernandez dropped 32 points to lead Catskill to a 64-60 victory over Mohonasen in the consoaltion gam eof the Kirvin Cup Classic on Saturday.
Catskill (7-1) led 17-13 after one quarter and extended the gap to 31-25 at halftime. Both teams scored 21 points in the third quarter, leaving the Cats in front, 52-46, entering the final eight minutes of play.
Leviticus Johnson added 16 points to Catskill’s cause.
Shawn Gillisslee led Mohonasen with 24 points. Alex gannon and Tim Febbie each had 12.

SCHENECTADY — Alex Barnhill and Ozzy DeJesus combined for 44 points as Mekeel Chrsitian handed Catskill its first loss of the season on Friday, handing the Cats an 82-45 setback in the first round of the Kirvin Cup Classic on Friday.
Mekeel, which won the state Class B championship two years ago, jumped out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back, going up 38-16 at halftime and 61-29 after three quarters.
Barnhill and DeJesus both had 22 for the Lions. Joe Roddy added 18.
Leviticus Johnson’s 12 points led Catskill. Lavon Fernandez had 11.

BERNE — Zeke Pulliam poured in 34 points to spark Berne-Knox-Westerlo to a 61-47 victory over Greenville in the championship game of the B-K-W Christmas Tournament on Saturday.
Mark Edwards had 18 points fr the Bulldogs, who rallied from an 18-12 first-quarter deficit to lead 30-21 at halftime and 44-38 through three quarters.
Damien Fiducia had 14 points for Greenville. Joe Nicosia had 11.
The Spartans’ Nicosia and Tim Biernacki were named to the All-Tournament team.

Ethan Handel’s 13 points topped Cairo-Durham.

Zachary Rice had 15 points for Tamarac. Dalton Maxon contributed 13.

CASTLETON — Maple Hill outscored Hoosic Valley 12-3 in overime to pull out a 70-61 victory and win the Holiday Hoopfest at The Hill championship on Sunday night.
Maple Hill led 17-10, 36-30 and 59-53 at the end of the first three quarters, but Hoosic Valley utscored the Wildcats 15-9 in the fourth quarter to even the score at 58-58 at the end of regulation.
Rian Jewett’s 22 points led Maple Hill. Black Decker added 18 and Dominic Hirschoff contributed 13.
Logan Reilly paced Hoosic Valley with 20 points. CJ Bassett had 15 and Tyler Eddy 10.

CASTLETON — Maple Hill broke open a close game with a big second quarter run and went on to defeat Ichabod Crane, 63-42, in the opening round of the Holiday Hoopfest at The Hill on Saturday.
The Wildcats were up 12-10 after one quarter of action, then went on a 24-9 second-quarter run to take a 36-19 lead by halftime. they widened the gap to 56-31 after three quarters.
Rian Jewett was Mape Hill’s top scorer wit 27 points. Blake decker had 17 and Dominic Hirschoff 10.
Ed Ogden led Ichabod Crane with 12 points. Zach Kennedy chipped in with nine.

Neville Anderson topped Hudson (4-4) with 14 points. Dayquan Griffin had 12 and Caleb Romano 10.
Ravena led 16-13 after one quarter and 31-25 at halftime, before breaking the game open with a 28-13 scoring advantage in the third stanza.
