HUDSON — Five high school seniors from Columbia County will receive Good Citizens awards at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Historic Hendrick Hudson Chapter House, 113 Warren St., Hudson.

They are Madison Bently, Taconic Hills; Isabell Bruns, New Lebanon Central; Trevor James Wolfe, Ichabod Crane Central; Martha Santos Canarte, Hudson High School; and Julia Gabrirelle Rose, Chatham Central High School.

Created in 1934, the DAR Good Citizens award and scholarship encourages and rewards qualities of good citizenship to high school seniors from accredited high schools, both public and private, throughout the United States.

This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.

Part of the scholarship requirements ask the students to write an essay.

This year’s essay is ‘You and your peers are our nation’s leaders of tomorrow. How would you energize America’s youth to fully engage as effective citizens? Why is that important?

The student must list all activities they have participated in as well as two recommendations and their academic record.
