GIRLS BASKETBALL: Brantley’s clutch shot lifts Catskill
CHATHAM — The Catskill Lady Cats visited the Lady Panthers of Chatham on Friday night and escaped with a 52-49 Patroon Conference victory.
Janay Brantley led both teams in scoring with 29 points in this nail-biter.
Much of the first period was full of great defense, and each team forcing the other to settle for low percentage shots. With only a few seconds remaining in the first, Catskill hit a three pointer and converted one of two free throws to end the quarter with a 13-10 lead.
The Cats worked their way to better looks in the second, and took advantage of extra chances when they could. But the Panthers stayed with the Cats for the duration of the period, and scored a few buckets themselves before halftime to cut Catskill’s lead to 25-19 going into the locker room.
The third quarter began with the Cats failing to box out the Panthers for rebounds on multiple occasions, giving Chatham an advantage over them in the painted area.
With the Panthers down 12 points with under 3:00 to play in the quarter, they fought their way back held the Cats to 4 points for the rest of the period. Chatham made two important free throws to end the third, and were down just five points, 42-37, going into the final eight minutes.
The Cats maintained a seven point cushion for the first few minutes of the fourth quarter but they were lackadaisical on defense, failing to pick up Chatham’s open shooters until it was too late.
After a Catskill timeout, the Panthers stole two consecutive inbound passes from the Cats, scoring four straight points to tie the game at 47. Chatham continued their intense defense and stole yet a third inbound pass and converted the open layup in the face of their opponent, to take a 49-47 lead in only 25 seconds of game time.
After trading two pairs of missed free throws, Janay Brantley knocked down a three point shot, the eventual game-winner, with 17.4 seconds left on the clock.
After Brantley made two crucial free throws, Chatham had a last chance to throw up a long shot to try and tie it but it fell short, and the Cats won by a hair.
Chatham will be on the road in Hudson for their next game, and Catskill will be back on their homecourt to host Maple Hill on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
