November 6, 2019 09:51 am

TSL Movies November 7 - November 14

n Mountaintop — A raw and extremely unfiltered look at the process of Neil Young and Crazy Horse making their first album in seven years. Witness the laughter, tensions, crusty attitudes, and love of a rock & roll band that’s been together for 50 years as they share their passion, first and foremost, for the music. 2019. 1h26m.

n Light from Light — Gifted with sometimes-prophetic dreams and a lifelong interest in the paranormal, Sheila (Marin Ireland) is asked to investigate a potential haunting at a Tennessee farmhouse. It’s there she meets Richard (Jim Gaffigan), a recent widower who believes his wife may still be with him. The investigation that ensues – which eventually pulls in Shelia’s son, Owen, and his classmate, Lucy – forces them to confront the mysteries of their own lives. 2019. 1h22m.

n By the Grace of God — Based on real events, a gripping and urgent story from filmmaker François Ozon (8 femmes, Swimming Pool) of the survivors who banded together to expose and dismantle the French Catholic Church’s code of silence surrounding Pastoral abuse. The true story is an ongoing scandal in France, with Philippe Barbarin, Cardinal of Lyon, convicted in March 2019 for concealing the conduct of Father Preynat. In French with subtitles. 2019. 2h17m.

n Female Pleasure —A documentary on five courageous and self-determined women, breaking the silence imposed by their societies and religious communities. With incredible strength, Deborah Feldman, Leyla Hussein, Rokudenashiko, Doris Wagner, and Vithika Yadav are fighting for sexual liberation and autonomy for women, beyond religious rules and cultural barriers. Their victory comes at a high price. In English, German, French, and Japanese with subtitles. 2018. 1h41m.

n Leonardo: The Works — Presented by Exhibition on Screen. Many feature films have showcased the genius of Leonardo, but none has ever examined in such detail the most crucial element of all: his art. Leonardo’s paintings will be at the core of the film, captured in staggering high-definition. Notably, the film presents every single painting attributed to Leonardo, offering unparalleled access for the first time. Amid this collection of masterpieces, cinema-goers will marvel at The Last Supper, Lady with an Ermine, Ginevra de’ Benci, Madonna Litta, Virgin of the Rocks, and what is widely considered the most famous artwork of all time – The Mona Lisa. 2019. 1h25m.

n Downtown 81 (1981) — In 1981, writer and Warhol associate Glenn O’Brien, Swiss photographer Edo Bertoglio, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, a graffiti innovator and noise music artist who’d just begun to exhibit his paintings, hit the streets of lower Manhattan to make a movie about the bombed-out bohemia, with a script by O’Brien, Bertoglio directing, and Basquiat, a naturally compelling presence, starring. Featuring John Lurie, Fab Five Freddy, and Debbie Harry, with musical performances by DNA, James White and the Blacks, and Kid Creole and the Coconuts – and Manhattan in all its mangy glory. 1981. 1h12m.

n Greener Grass — In a bizarro version of suburbia – where adults wear braces on their already-straight teeth, everyone drives golf carts, and children magically turn into golden retrievers – best friends Jill and Lisa are locked in a passive aggressive battle-of-the-wills that takes a turn into the sinister when Lisa begins systematically taking over Jill’s life. Meanwhile, a psycho killer is on the loose, Jill’s husband (SNL’s Beck Bennett) has developed a curious taste for pool water, and Lisa is pregnant with a soccer ball. A hilariously demented, Stepford Wives-on-acid satire destined to be an instant cult classic. 2019. 1h37m.

Artist Reception

Saturday, November 9, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Claude began his studies in New York at the New York Studio School but he was no stranger to art at that time, having grown up with a father who was a major contributor to the Abstract Expressionist school, Nicolas Carone, a contemporary and comrade of Jackson Pollock, William de Kooning, and other founding fathers of the abstract expressionist movement. After the New York Studio School, Claude continued his education at the Maryland Institute of Art and then, independently, in Rome, Italy. He has exhibited in various cities in England, Italy, and the United States.

Carone is an intuitive painter. He may start a canvas with a gesture and then respond to that gesture with another until he sees and feels the beginning of a visual composition. As he goes back to painting, he may re-enter into a situation that he then plays into or finds a certain rhythm in the painting or a dialogue between the image and space and respond to it. He paints on wooden panels with casein, powdered pigment, polymer, and wax. The resulting work is sometimes brooding and always energetic painting that emanates from his ability to tap the unconscious and let his body channel these emotions into a rhythmic and dynamic composition.

The work will be on display through December 1st

Hudson History Bus Tour

Sunday, November 10, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Back by popular demand!!!

Our bus tour of the historic buildings, people, scandals, and moments in Hudson’s history is having a fall edition! This is not a repeat of the first tour and will include more anecdotal information and specific stories from history. The bus for this tour is smaller with comfier seats and has windows that allow for better viewing.

The tour begins and ends at Hudson Brewing Company at 99 South 3rd St. in Hudson and members of the tour will receive a free drink ticket as part of the tour cost. The bus will leave at 1pm and travel through the streets of Hudson. Tickets are $60, in honor of the library’s 60th birthday. Seating is limited. To register email programs@hudsonarealibrary.org, call 518-828-1792 x101, or visit the main desk in the library.

Leading the tour is inimitable library History Room researcher John Craig (a Hudson fixture and according to the Gossips of Rivertown: “a tenacious researcher”). He will be accompanied by former Hudson Mayor Richard F. Tracy, who will also drive the tour bus. These two gentlemen will regale tour-goers with the real history of Hudson, the oldest city in the United States.

Established by whalers and merchants from Nantucket and New Bedford, Hudson has had many incarnations: as a safe harbor for maritime commerce, an industrial city with foundries, mills, cement plants, and factories; and then as a city valuing its history and historic architecture attracting retailers, writers, and other artists to the city. Hudson today is a city of many communities with economic, cultural, and racial diversity, that are debating through democratic means how the city should be defined, how it can best take care of its residents, and how it can thrive in its next iteration today and in the future.

Sylvia Hasenkopf will present the last program of the Greenville Local History Group’s 2019 season. Also included are the related stories about East Greenville/Brandy Hill, the hamlet of 200 years ago of which has almost no trace left as well as the Butler tinware industry, a topic well known in antiques circles.

The public is invited, free of charge, to the program on Monday, November 11, 7:30 p.m., at the Greenville Library. Light refreshments will be served.
