Tannersville home lost to fire

TANNERSVILLE — Fire destroyed a home in Tannersville early Monday morning, fire officials said Monday.

Tannersville firefighters responded to 5935 Main St. just after 1 a.m., officials said. They were at the scene for almost four hours.

The two-story wood-frame home was fully involved when they arrived at the scene and immediately requested mutual aid, officials said.

The home was completely destroyed and some parts of the building collapsed during the fire, officials said.

No injuries were reported to firefighters battling the blaze, officials said.

Two people who were renting the home were able to get out safely, but they were taken to Columbia Memorial Health in Hudson to be checked out for minor smoke inhalation, Tannersville Assistant Fire Chief Steve Tuomey said Monday.

Firefighters were able to prevent flames from spreading to a commercial building less than 10 feet away next door, fire officials said.

The weather early Monday morning made fighting the fire difficult, officials said.

Snow was falling heavily in sub-freezing termperatures at the time of the fire, which slowed down travel time, officials said.

The Greene County Cause and Origin Team is looking into the cause but at this time it does not appear to be suspicious, Tuomey said. Firefighters were back in service at 4:45 a.m. Route 23A was closed while firefighters were at the scene, officials said. Motorists were being detoured onto side streets.

Fire companies from Haines Falls, Hunter, Lanesville, and the ladder truck from Catskill responded to the scene, officials said. Crews from Palenville were put on stand-by.
