Top 25 athletes to look out for: 20-16
We resume our list of Top 25 student-athletes to look out for during the 2018-19 school year.
In this group of five, we have an MVP, record holders and three-sport stars. Expect big years out of each of these athletes.
Jenna Skype, ChathamSoccer/Basketball/Softball, Senior
For the past four years, whenever an All-Star list is revealed after the softball season, Jenna Skype’s name could be found. As an eighth grader she was a second team Patroon Conference All-Star. She earned first team honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior. One title that has eluded Skype is league MVP. She has one more shot at claiming the honor as a senior.
“Jenna has been an outstanding student-athlete for Chatham the past four years,” softball coach JB Brantley said. “She is extremely passionate and is a great teammate. I am looking forward to seeing what her senior year brings as she returns to the soccer field this fall along with basketball and softball. She has carved out a nice high school career, especially on the softball field.”
Gil Bell, Coxsackie-AthensBasketball/Baseball, Senior
A three-sport athlete, Gil Bell has performed well in football, basketball and baseball for Coxsackie-Athens. On the diamond, he’s been playing on varsity since he was a freshman. Bell hit .310 as a sophomore and improved as a junior, leading the Indians to a 16-5 record. On the basketball court, he is a consistent double-digit scorer who provides the spark for the C-A squad. This year, look for Bell to concentrate on basketball and baseball, where he could showcase his talents enough to earn a college scholarship.
Corey Topple, HudsonFootball/Volleyball, Senior
Corey Topple is known for his play on the volleyball court, earning the Patroon Conference MVP award during the 2016-17 campaign. Last year he was named a first team All-Star. While Topple is expected to be a beast on the court over the winter season, watch out for him this fall as he takes over at starting quarterback of the Hudson football team.
“Outstanding all-around volleyball player who has all the tools to compete at the next level,” Hudson volleyball coach Chuck Peters said. “He will anchor this year’s team in its attempt for a third Section II championship in a row.”
Killian/Kane Schrader,Coxsackie-AthensBasketball/Baseball, Junior
The Schrader twins, Killian and Kane, are nearly indistinguishable on the field and each have opened up eyes with their performances. This past season, as a sophomore, Kane entered into the record books by hitting four home runs in a single game. The year prior, Killian batted .328 as a freshman. The two have also given opposing players fits on the basketball court, as each of the Schraders can plug in double digit point totals on any given night.
“I just think he’s been working real hard this season on his swing and focusing at putting the ball in play,” C-A coach Curt Wilkinson said after Kane hit four homers in a single game.
Riley Gibbons,GermantownSoccer/Basketball, Sophomore
Riley Gibbons proved to be one of the best athletes at Germantown High School as a freshman, excelling at two different sports. Gibbons led Germantown’s first-year soccer program to its first-ever postseason victory as a junior, assisting on three goals in a 4-1 victory over Whitehall. She finished the season with eight goals and a CHVL first team All-Star selection. On the basketball team, Gibbons was a consistent double digit scorer for the Lady Clippers, leading the team in scoring, rebounds and blocked shots en route to a CHVL All-Star second team selection.
