Proud of the result
To the editor:
In response to Mr. Urbaitis’ recent rebuke of the Kinderhook Library renovation and addition project, I take issue with a number of his observations and comments and his “doubts about the general workmanship of the entire project.” Specifically: no plastic trim was used on the building. The upper eave reproduction moldings are in fact solid, select, Sapele, primed and painted, and the lower trim is Boral. The main ingredient of Boral is volcanic ash. It is water resistant, paintable, extremely durable, and fireproof (it is also very green — it’s use saves trees!) The new roof had to be corrected at the bottom edge due to an improperly installed vent strip. There are now and never were any condensation issues in the attic. The addition was insulated to a level of R-30 in the walls and R-57 in the attic, well beyond what is required by code.
My company has been responsible for many architecturally sensitive and appropriate restorations of historic homes throughout the county and local craftsmen from my company and others put many hours of fine work into the library project and are very proud of the result.
