Volume Presents: N Flynn, D Steinke and M Rafala

November 6, 2019 09:51 am

HUDSON — Volume Reading Series, hosted by Hallie Goodman and Dani Grammerstorf French, happens on the second Saturday of every month. We feature an hour of exceptional prose and poetry readings (7-8), followed by a killer DJ set (8-9) to warm up the room. Meet your favorite writer, get your book signed, bust a move and/or stare at the floor awkwardly. We provide the soundtrack.

This event is always free. Save your $$ for books and beer!

On November 9th, Volume is proud to celebrate our 4 year anniversary with Nick Flynn, Darcey Steinke and Marco Rafalà followed by a DJ set from Kate Hewett.

Now it’s time to brag about our November lineup:

NICK FLYNN is the author of three memoirs, The Reenactments, The Ticking is the Bomb: A Memoir of Bewilderment, and Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. He is the author of five books of poetry, I Will Destroy You, My Feelings, The Captain Asks For a Show of Hands, Some Ether, which won the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award, and Blind Huber. Flynn has been awarded fellowships from The Guggenheim Foundation, The Library of Congress, The Amy Lowell Trust, and The Fine Arts Work Center. His poems, essays, and non-fiction have appeared in The New Yorker, the Paris Review, National Public Radio’s This American Life, and The New York Times Book Review.

DARCEY STEINKE is the author of the New York Times Notable memoir Easter Everywhere, as well as five novels. In 2017 Maggie Nelson wrote a foreword for a new edition of Suicide Blonde. With Rick Moody, she edited Joyful Noise: The New Testament Revisited (Little, Brown 1997). Her books have been translated into ten languages, and her nonfiction has appeared widely. Her web-story Blindspot was a part of the 2000 Whitney Biennial. She has been both a Henry Hoyns and a Stegner Fellow; Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi; and has taught at the Columbia University School of the Arts, Barnard, The American University of Paris, and Princeton. Flash Count Diary is her most recent book.

MARCO RAFALÁ is a first-generation Sicilian American novelist, musician, and writer for award-winning tabletop role-playing games. He earned his MFA in Fiction from The New School and is a cocurator of the Guerrilla Lit Reading Series in New York City. Born in Middletown, Connecticut, he now lives in Brooklyn, New York. How Fires End is his debut novel.

Stick around after the reading for book shopping and signing, along with a one-hour DJ set (8-9) from Kate Hewett. There will also be trashy sheet cake to honor this important milestone: 4 YEARS OF LITERARY MAGNIFICENCE! Special thanks to our beloved Spotty Dog Books & Ale for helping us make magic every month and to Anna Victoria Photography for capturing it all so well.
