BOYS BASKETBALL: Maines leads Hudson past Coxsackie-Athens
COXSACKIE — The Hudson Bluehawks came away with a hard fought Patroon Conference boys basketball victory on the road Friday night, 70-59, against the Coxsackie-Athens Indians.
Hudson’s Isaiah Maines led all players with 23 points and teammates Noah Hedgepeth and Dayquan Griffin added 16 and 13, respectively, to lead the Bluehawks (10-3, 10-6) to the win.
The game got out to a very fast start, Hedgepeth drained three shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter, giving Hudson a 15-12 lead midway through.
The Indians continued to stick with the Bluehawks’ fast paced offense, and were only down 22-19 at the end of the first. The second period was more of the same, each team going shot-for-shot, and trading the lead back and forth throughout.
Bluehawks’ Nate Johnson had an important block on an Indians shot attempt at the end of the half, and Hudson went into halftime down by a point, 36-35.
The third period began with hard defense on display for both teams, the referees missing more than a handful of foul calls for both sides. A few minutes later, Hudson took the lead at the free throw line as the quarter was ending, and led 52-51 going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter started with a small 6-2 run by Hudson in the first 3:30, forcing Coxsackie-Athens to call a timeout. Out of short break, the Indians responded with six unanswered points of their own to take a 59-58 lead.
On the next play, Isaiah Maines was fouled as he knocked down a jumper, made his free throw, and put the Bluehawks up for good as Coxsackie-Athens did not score again.
Hudson picked up a few more points at the end off of rebounds, thanks to desperate shots by the Indians and went on to win the game.
