HHLT hosts annual community forum: Wildlife through the Hidden Lens

COLD SPRING — The Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) will host its 15th annual Community Forum 1-4 p.m. April 14 at the Old VFW Hall, 34 Kemble Ave., Cold Spring. The forum, Wildlife through the Hidden Lens, will focus on how scientists are using cameras and other technology to better understand our natural world. Attendees will also learn how to use technology to discover wildlife in their own backyards. Speakers include Dr. Ed McGowan, director of the Trailside Museums & Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park; Dr. Scott LaPoint, Research Scientist at Black Rock Forest; and Dr. Brent Boscarino, Invasive Species Citizen Science Program Coordinator at the Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM).

Trail cameras and various mobile technologies are becoming increasingly popular tools for researchers and conservationists to observe and monitor wildlife in their natural habitats. Mobile technologies are also available to nature enthusiasts, citizen scientists, and anyone else looking to get a glimpse into the wonders of the natural world where they live.

During the event, Dr. McGowan will share findings and images from his four-year camera trapping study in Harriman State Park, which was aimed at detecting the rare Golden Eagle. Dr. LaPoint will discuss his ongoing scientific study within Black Rock Forest to better understand the movements of the elusive Fisher, whose populations are recovering in the Northeast after nearly being wiped out centuries ago. Dr. Boscarino will show attendees how they can use technology to explore local ecosystems in their own backyards and make contributions to scientific research. He will also introduce existing citizen science projects and digital resources that are available to the public. Forum attendees will be invited to submit questions to these experts and participate in the discussion.
