Honor a Vet thank you
To the editor:
As the eldest member of the family of World War II Army veteran Gerald Card of Philmont, thank you to the Columbia County Honor A Veteran Committee for recognizing Dad in November for his service to this country.
We received the US flag which was first flown over the US Capital and for the month of December at the Columbia County office building on State Street in Hudson.
As significant as the ceremony and awards were from the state senate, assembly, county and his hometown, most poignant to us was the recognition of his extensive combat experience in Europe with General George Patton’s troops. Even more so was the stunning news to us that Dad’s unit had liberated one of the Nazi labor camps. We never knew. Dad was part of the Greatest Generation, and they never talked about that kind of thing.
We are so proud of him and so grateful to the Honor a Veteran Committee as well as the veterans and military honor guard who took the time to honor their brother.
On behalf of the entire family thank you.
