Hudson goes down in first round; Chatham advances

HUDSON -- Sophomore Devin Garland hit three free throws in the final 42 seconds to give No. 11 Mechanicville a 69-66 victory over No. 6 Hudson in the first round of the Section II Class B boys basketball playoffs on Tuesday.

Mechanicville of the Wasaren League took control of the game early and only trailed twice, building as much as a 15-point lead late in the first half before Hudson came to life to make a game of it.

After trailing 23-12 after one quarter and 40-29 at the half, the Bluehawks rallied , outscoring the Red Raiders 24-13 in the third stanza to pull even, 53-53 with a quarter to go.

Mechanicville was in front 63-59 with 3:12 left, but a bucket by Dayquan Griffin and a three by Leviticus Johnson gave Hudson its first lead since 2-0, 64-63, with 2:25 to go.

The score was deadlocked at 66-66 when Garland made one of two free throws to put Mechanicville back in front, 67-66. After Hudson missed a potential go-ahead shot, the Red Raiders Josh Germain was fouled and missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Garland got the offensive rebound and was quickly fouled with :08 seconds left. He nailed both shots to make it a three-point game.

After a timeout, Hudson quickly got the ball up the floor, but a three-point try at the buzzer was just off the mark.

"We knew Hudson was capable of scoring a lot of points, so we wanted to control the tempo and we did a great job in the first half," Mechanicville coach Rian Richardson said. "Hudson came out in the second half and took over the tempo and got right back in it, tied it up and took the lead with two and a half minutes left, but our guys didn't break. We made  couple of big foul shots at the end and they were real gritty tonight and showed a lot heart. I couldn't be happier right now."

Germain was the Red Raiders' top scorer with 18 points Garland added 16 and Anthony Atalla and Luciano D'Ambro had 12 apiece.

Griffin kept the Bluehawks in the game with a dominating performance, scoring 32 points. Lavon Fernandez added 15.

"Hudson is a tough to play and Shawn (Briscoe) does a great job with what he has, the kids are very tough and physical," Richardson said. "We played some tough competition in our league this year and it got us ready for tonight. I'm very excited for a lot of guys who showed a lot of heart out there. Winning sectionals is not easy and to get this one under our belts feels real good right now."

Hudson finishes up with a 13-8 record and will lose seniors Spencer Goldstien, Tristen Collins and Nick Bernockie to graduation.

 Fonda 69, Coxsackie-Athens 47

FONDA -- Jackson Atty poured in 26 points to help No. 5 Fonda post a 69-47 victory over No. 12 Coxsackie-Athens in Tuesday's Section II Class B boys basketball first-round playoff game.

Fonda advances to play No. 4 Catskill on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Shenendehowa High School.

The Braves jusped out to a 17-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended the margin to 34-13 at halftime and 54-21 through three quarters.

John Mancini followed Atty with 13 points for Fonda. 

Gil Bell dropped 21 for C-A.

Glens Falls 98, Greenville 57

GLENS FALLS -- New York State's all-time leading scorer, Joe Girard III, scored 55 points to lead No.2 Glens Falls to a 98-57 victory over No. 15 Greenville in Tuesday's Section II Class B boys basketball playoff first-round game.

Girard, who averages 48 points per game, knocked down eight 3-pointers and 11 for 12 from the free throw line in helping the Indiand advance to Friday's quarterfinal round.

Nick Danahy added 13 points for Glens Falls.

CLASS C

Chatham 64, Fort Plain 46

CHATHAM -- Keon Armstrong and Jayshawn Williams combined for 34 points to spark N0. 4 Chatham to a 64-46 victory over No. 13 Fort Plain in the first round of the Section II Class C boys basketball playoffs on Tuesday.

Armstrong finished with 18 and Williams had 16 for Chatham (16-5), which advances to the quarterfinals to play No. 5 Mayfield on Friday at 8 p.m. at Shenendehowa High School.

Jon Elbert added 11 points to the Panthers' attack. 

Troy Butler led Fort Plain with 18 points.Dawson Nare had 11 and Jaxon Yacowenia 10.

Chatham built quarterly leads of 19-11, 38-22 and 50-33.

Maple Hill 77, Hadley-Luzerne 35

CASTLETON -- Patroon Conference co-champion Maple Hill advanced to the Section II Class C quarterfinals after disposing of No. 14 Hadley-Luzerne, 77-35, on Tuesday.

The No. 3 Wildcats will play No. 6 Granville on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Hudson Valley Community College.

Maple Hill wasted little time in taking control of Tuesday's game, rolling to a 12-4 lead after one quarter, then extending it to 34-12 at halftime and 56-26 through three quarters.

Nate Mannion paced the Wildcats with 17 points. Rian Jewett had 14 and Quinn Pratico and Evan Kulpa 13 apiece.

Danny McMahon led Hadley-Luzerne with 17 points.

North Warren 61, Germantown 44

FORT EDWARD -- No. 4 North Warren had four players reach double figures in scoring in a 61-44 victory over No. 5 Germantown in Tuesday's Section II Class D girls basketball first-round playoff game.

Jodi Bartlett led the Cougars with 15 points. Kaitlin Kramar, Emma Phelps and Jaclyn Urtz all had 10.

Riley Gibbons was Germantown's top scorer with 13 points. Kierland Denninger chipped in with nine.

North Warren trailed 10-9 after one quarter but went ahead 25-24 at halftime, then outscored the Clippers 36-20 in the second half to ice the victory.
