Save our planet and pay working families as they participate

To the editor:

I was thankful to have read this week’s carbon tax legislation article on The Register-Star’s front page.

Recent data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Scripps reveals the highest CO2 level were recorded in 2018.

Scientists have continually presented data associating climate change with our increasingly severe weather patterns. Economists have shown agricultural and tourism impacting our economy adversely.

Columbia County has been the recipient of significant water and flooding problems over the past year. There has been inability to mow wet lawns, road damage from erosion and farm crop destruction.

The 4th National Climate Assessment, the culmination of years of research and analysis by hundreds of top climate scientists in the country, provided us with risk assessment analysis to help us consider reducing CO2.

Climate change will create new risks to our environment. We will face a dramatically different world, which will include mass migration, property and infrastructure losses, health problems from waterborne and foodborne diseases as well as geographic alterations and distribution of disease carrying pest and insects.

Our newly elected congressman has expressed a commitment to preserving our environment. Action will be required preserve plant earth for our children, as there is no planet B. We can all participate by writing and calling our local, state and federal legislators to intensify the political will to pass the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act during 2019. The elements of this policy are to significantly reduce carbon with dividends being distributed to the families in our country.
