Varmall, Davis earn early finishes
Professional fighters from Greene County left their mark in the ring over the weekend with Catskill’s Alvin Varmall Jr. and Cairo’s Mike Davis earning spectacular knockouts.
Varmall, a Louisiana native training out of Cus D’Amato’s KO Boxing Gym in Catskill, showed why he is ranked the No. 17 cruiserweight in the United States by boxrec.com in his fight against Niagara Falls’ Eric George (4-16).
Varmall was dominant at Uptown Live in North Carolina, knocking George through the ropes at one point before stopping him via TKO in the second round.
The knockout is Varmall’s 10th of his professional boxing career. He now stands at 12-0-1 and has another fight slated for Aug. 19 at the Claridge Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City against an opponent to be determined.
Davis, a Cairo-Durham High graduate who relocated to Florida to train at Pete White Boxing, also made quick work of his opponent, Channing Williams (1-2), in a pro MMA fight.
At Island Fights 41 in Pensacola, Florida, Davis stalked Williams until finding an opening, dropping his opponent with a punch and finishing the fight on the ground, earning a first round knockout victory.
Davis, fighting at 145 pounds, is a fast-rising prospect in both boxing and MMA. He went undefeated as an amateur and is currently 3-0 in both sports with three KOs in MMA and two in boxing. He weighed in prior to his fight with -2 percent body fat, standing on the scale at a perfect 145.0 pounds before ballooning up to 166 pounds at fight time, making him one of the largest fighters in his division.
Davis doesn’t have another fight lined up at the moment.
