Dorothy C. Ostrowski
Dorothy C. Ostrowski, 93, of Valatie, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, February 16, 2020.
Born September 18, 1926 in North Chatham on the family homestead on Route 17, she was the daughter the late Arthur C. and Carrie A. (Popans) Howard. Dot was a lifetime resident of Columbia County living on Route 203 since 1952. She graduated from Martin Van Buren School in Kinderhook in 1946. She married the late Edward Ostrowski on her birthday, September 18, 1949. He predeceased her in August of 1990. She, along with her husband Ed were Dairy Herd Supervisors for 28 years. She also was a food service helper and cook at the Ichabod Crane Primary School for 16 years. Dot had been a past-chairman of the Niverville Home Demonstration unit, a 4-H member and 20 year leader of the Up-to-the-Minute Girl’s 4-H club. She was a past Master and Secretary of Lindenwald Grange #985, past Secretary of the Golden Agers of Columbia County, past Treasurer and a charter life member of the Niverville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Dottie’s other memberships included the North Chatham Methodist Church, St. John’s Elves, the Board of Trustees of Woodlawn Cemetery, North Chatham Historical Society, the Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation, the Mellenville Grange # 1255 including its Executive Committee, a Director on Columbia County Fair Grange exhibits. She joined the Tri-Village Senior Citizens in 1992 and held the office of president. In May of 2008, the senior building in Valatie was dedicated in her name, the “Dotty Ostrowski Senior Center”. Dot was always ready to help someone in need and was proud of her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved her home and to cook and bake, especially apple pie for the Elves. If you asked her to party, her remark always was, “I’m a worker and not a party person”. She will be missed by a large circle of friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter Doreen Ann Worrell and her husband William of Red Hook, her son Howard Ostrowski and his wife Deborah of Chatham Center, a sister Adeline Ostrowski of Chatham, and was known as G.G. to the following Chris, Tricia, Connor and Ella Hahn & Jaime, Chad, Jared, Maddie and Emma Zalucky, several nieces and nephews and her grandchildren with four legs, Abbey, Shelby, Grayson, Olivia and Simon.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 22nd, 2020, 11:00am, at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Valatie. Calling hours will be Friday, February 21st from 2-4pm and Saturday from 10-11am before the funeral.
